Fun and Informative for the Curious

This little book - in size, not pages or content - did for me exactly what I hope it would do: introduce me to the types of commercial vessels that ply the Great Lakes and help me figure out the best places to spot them.

I arrived in Cleveland as a young man on the very night that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior several hundred miles away. Despite the distance, the rain in Cleveland was torrential. In places water was up to the wheel hubs of my U-Haul. The next morning, or perhaps two days later, the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper published a map of the lakes showing sites of ship wrecks - I was astounded at how many of them there were.

Now that I'm approaching retirement age I'm planning some excursions; one around the lakes. Everything I need is here for this part of the trip: flags, vessel profiles, likely watching spots, where certain ships are usually found, and brief histories of the major types. Lots of illustrations (in color) and maps. A fun read

Yes, I received a free copy - but only because I won it in a contest and only because I wanted it enough to enter the contest. You can be damn sure I wouldn't praise Ship Watching on the Great Lakes if not deserved.

The heroic and bloody story of the Roman gladiators is retold in Watkins's debut work, a comprehensive and vividly illustrated guide that will impart his obvious passion for the subject to budding historians. Despite their sophistication in government and the arts, Romans had a cruel and crude taste for violence, and Watkins traces the growth of the games from the first combat in 264 b.c., at the funeral of Junius Brutus, to the elaborate spectacles that regularly entranced thousands at the Colosseum. A job that was first thought fit only for prisoners of war, slaves, and criminals, it became an honored profession that, at the height of the empire, was more than half-full of distinguished male volunteers (women gladiators were officially banned in a.d. 200). Watkins meticulously reviews the training of gladiators and also takes readers through an upbeat gallery of the various types of gladiators who played the games. The black-and-white drawings capture the elegance of the Roman Colosseum, and the excitement of the sea battles that were held at terrific expense; the renderings of the gladiators are consistently dramatic. (Cleveland) This is so well written and about much more than gladiators. It is about human societies, "civilization", moral complexity, and the culture which gave contemporary America much of our language, values and laws. Scary, and important.

Here is a sample:

"At its height, the Roman Empire controlled all of southern Europe, Britain, Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and North Aftrica. Cities were established, trade was regulated, taxes were collected. Rome built 53,000 miles of roads, bridges, aquaducts, and sewers, some ofwhich are still in use. Its laws, manners, and customs were adopted all over the empire.
But for all its glory, it's difficult to ignore the fact the the Roman Empire was won by military force and built by the labor of millions of slaves. To the average Roman citizen, life was hard, war was a contant threat, and slaves were just another piece of property. And in spite of their sophistication in government, business, and the arts, Romans had a crude taste for violence and cruelty. For almost a thousand years Roman society represented both the best and the worst of human civilization."

An excellent introduction to gladiatorial games

Richard Watkins' book on the gladiators of Rome is a welcome addition to the sparse literature on these most fascinating 'sports figures' and the 'games' they engaged in. Targeted principally for the younger readers, it is still an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the professional swordsmen of the arena. The illustrations are quite good, although a more colourful and detailed medium than graphite might have better served to capture the parade-like splendour of the events. Gladiator is an worthwhile companion to Michael Grant's harder to find (and more detailed) Gladiators (also highly recommended).

Gladiators by richard watkins is a great book. It has some intresting information on what gladiators are, what they do, and how the do it. I learned from this book that not only did gladiators fight to the death, but most of the time thier lives depended on the crowd. I really enjoyed reading this book. It had alot of intresting facts in it. If your thinking about getting it I highly reccomend getting it.

Brilliant, Suspenseful!

A fantastic sci-fi read! I had read all of Octavia Butler's works, and after researching similar artist settled on this book. It's a slow beginning but once it builds there's no putting it down! I'm immediately downloading other works in this series & by this writer. My Soul to Keep is full of beautiful, painful, genuine imagination and African cultural contexts which only increases the beauty.

Thinkin' Fiction -- the Ancient African

It baffles me why some folks want to force Ms. Due to be a horror writer. She is absolutely not, and this is why I love her work. She incorportes realism, with myticism, the supernatural, but not horror. The people live very real lives, but have some quirks about them. Ms. Due write fiction with depth. She makes you think, and is an excellent, imaginative storyteller.

I feel like David and Jessica are members of my family. Every sistah needs a David/Dawit, of course, minus his indiscretions and personality deficits. If you are looking for a great love story, thrown in for good measure, murder, secrets, suspense, and the unbelievable, why My Soul to Keep is for you.

I discovered Mrs. Due a couple of years ago by accident. I was in the library one day and I saw this book with this very menacing cover. Out of curiosity, I opened the book and began to read. I was hooked. It was love at first sight. Imagine my utter joy when I discovered that The Living Blood was a Sequel to My Soul to Keep. Immediately, I returned to the library a few weeks later and checked out My Soul to Keep. I kept that book for almost 6 weeks. At that point, I knew I had to have my own copies for my library.

This is a love, suspense, supernatural thriller. David and Jessica are a happily married couple. Actually, Jessica has counted herself so lucky in meeting a fantastic man so early in her life. In comparison to so many sisters, where the pool of viable & desirable marriage partners is very shallow, she has a good man. She could not have asked for a better man. He is a great provider, husband, lover and father. Unbeknownst to Jessica, Dawit/David has a secret. When it is discovered, all hell breaks loose.

The book is so well written and highly imaginative. Mrs. Due makes you believe the unbelievable, that immortals inhabitant the earth and live among mortals. She is an excellent story teller. What also attracts me to her is she is obviously well-versed in African American history. On the sneak, she gives the reader a history lesson.

I also appreciate the fact that the black men are fully developed human beings, not caricatures. I know many sistahs would love to have a man like Dawit. He is everything a woman could ask for - well almost.

This is not a vampire story, though I love them. This is about human beings, with no supernatural powers. They just want permanently kick da bucket. Jessica doesn't realize her man is way older than he says. 30? Yeah right? Enjoy! The saga begins.

I love this author. More people need to know who she is.

Smart, Sexy and Scary

"My Soul to Keep" is an engaging read by Tananarive Due. Jessica has married the perfect man. David is a brilliant Jazz scholar, author of several books, handsome, sexy and a wonderful father...but unbeknownst to Jessica, David is also an immortal being with a dark past and possibly even darker present.

The dialogue is strong and even though the premise is way out there, Due's storytelling ability is such that suspension of disbelief is not a problem. Incidentally, this story is a surprisingly accurate symbol for what happens in long term relationships; at some point we all experience(in the immortal words of Billy Joel) the Stranger that kicks us right between the eyes...that time when we see something in our partner that is so foreign that it seems that we never knew them at all. Jessica begins to suspect that there is a hidden secret in her beloved David and Due's descriptions of Jessica's personal denials and pendulum like emotions concerning her husband are brilliant. Most of us that have been married for some time have experienced that and the author manages to harness that natural feeling of anxiety and uses it in "My Soul to Keep". Whether Ms. Due has done this intentionally or not (I suspect she has though) doesn't really matter.

"My Soul to Keep" could fit into a half dozen genre's and whether you like horror, science fiction, romance or action/adventure you will enjoy "My Soul to Keep".
