EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!

This book far exceeded my expectations! With over 300 illustrations ranging from equine, feline, canine,etc. it covers a huge variety of systems and muscle groups! Was very, very impressed! My high school (within LAUSD) is creating a zoology class in the next year, and I have recommended this book to them which will be the main source for all the worksheet and labeling assignments!! Very detailed book and the pictures are extremely sharp and accurate! Very, very good product for the price. I can't recommend it enough. Each animal type is categorized by body positions and anatomical views, rendering a complete view of the animal over several different sections in the book.

A typical layout of any page will include:

1) the anatomical view of the animal
2) 22+ different labels of the sanctioned (according to #chapter) parts to color!
3) Description of the system at the top of the page (what you are looking at)
4) Clean, non-waxed or glossy paper, to color on
...and more!!!!

But to any potential buyers, whether you are a vet student, zoologist, animal system aficionado, or simply have a minor interest in animal sciences and anatomy (like me), then I highly recommend this book for you! I would not recommend buying a textbook that runs from $50-$98, until you buy this book. For only a fraction of the cost of veterinary textbooks, it serves as a great introduction to veterinary medicine and anatomy!

*** I would suggest buying a 2" binder, photocopying (at work or a friend's office, the pages of interest to you) and then storing it in the binder and keeping the book in your library for safe-keeping. That way you can have a more professional reference tool and sell the book, "unmarked" and in "like new condition" in the future! Thanks for reading the review!

Amazing book and study tool

I bought this book about a month ago, and ever since then, I've been coloring in it everyday. I'm a Veterinary Technology student and one of my hardest classes right now is Animal Anatomy. This book covers so much that it has really helped me with my studies. It covers not just canine and feline, but bovine and equine as well. The equine has really helped this far in my semester because that's what my whole semester is based on. It helps me study for tests and it's proven to really help when trying to recall certain parts. I can close my eyes during a test and picture what I colored and the color of that specific part. I would recommend this book to any veterinary technology student, veterinary medicine student, or anyone that just wanted to learn about the anatomy of these animals.

This Could Be a Lot Better

Unlike my human A&P coloring book, a majority of this book's pictures contain multiple systems, which gives it a jumbled appearance. I would frequently have to search through the entire book just to find the pictures that contain some bones, muscles, etc. The pictures themselves range from poor-quality to decent/good.

That stated, it is better than nothing if anatomy coloring books help you, and it's pretty much the only option you have for animal A&P. It simply needs to be restructured into a more concise layout.

The new, fourth edition of Bruce Pauley’s Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini: Totalitarianism in the Twentieth Century features an updated and expanded bibliographical essay and the latest scholarship on the wartime goals of Hitler and Stalin. Also included is new information on the disintegration of the Soviet empire. Like its predecessors, this book presents an innovative comparison of the origins, development, and demise of the three forms of totalitarianism that emerged in Europe early in the twentieth century. After addressing the failure of the preceding regimes, it traces the development of the totalitarian movements of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and Fascist Italy—showing how each national leader was able to capture and consolidate authority before the inevitable plummet from power. While offering vivid portraits of the dictators’ youths, early careers, relationships with women, management styles, and cults of personality (both personally crafted and as created by their propaganda machines), Pauley moves beyond conventional narratives of totalitarianism to offer a unique, interpretive comparison of the economics, culture, education, and health-care systems of the three dictatorships. Other themes explored include the regimes' position on fine arts and popular entertainment, treatment of women and young people, and terroristic oppression of religious institutions and minorities. About the Author

About the Author
Jim has designed and developed a wide variety of games such as Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40,000, Star Wars Miniatures, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Dungeons and Dragons, Star Frontiers, GURPS, Star Wars, and TORG. In addition to tabletop games, Jim has also developed games for PCs and consoles: Special Forces, Warzone 2100, Conflict: Desert Storm I & II, the Great Escape, Conflict: Vietnam, and Conflict: Global Storm, amongst others. Combat HQ is his latest set of rules. It grew out of Jim's desire to play a fast moving World War Two miniatures game that not only required him to make decisions as an army commander, but also contained sufficient detail to capture the intricacies and complexities of World War Two combat in an entertaining manner. Highly Recommend!

I was lucky to get an advanced copy of this rule system, and I was so impressed, I just bought my own finished copy here on Amazon!

I have been looking for a system that bridges a gap between the simplicity of Axis & Allies Miniatures, and the complexity of Flames of War. This is just one of very few systems I've found that fit that bill, while also filling the criteria of being unique unto itself. I've played many miniatures systems, and through my own Wargaming forum ([...]), have had the privaledge to learn from, and play against the best mini-gamers out there. Based on years of experience, I can also see this system playing at gaming conventions, as it is so easy to learn and teach. To cut to the chase: I strongly recommend you pick this rulebook up and add it to your Arsenal!

It plays at Platoon-level, but the scope upon which you play those platoons is only limited to your personal OB of units avaialble. I like that a lot! For me, I will be playing this in 15mm, using Axis & Allies Minaitures, Flames of War armor, and Old Glory armor. A vehicle model represents 5-units (ex. 1 model = 5 tanks); while a base of infantry figures equal 30-50 men. This is pretty standard stuff...but what I especially like is that it is also flexible on how you base. Where some systems have a following of players that DEMAND you base only in such a way, only with their miniatures, this is an open-minded system where if you own a huge number of say Axis & Allies Minatures (like I do), you can convert your idle a and dust clad gems into a mean, lean fighting machine!

The system is heavily dice driven (ten 6-side dice is the norm), encompassing how you move, fight, rally, defend; and used with the systems alternating player action, you remain engaged throughout a typical 2-4 hour game. You are the overall Commander of your side; your platoons assuming to inherently containing it's leaders. The combination of using these Command dice, with a mechanic of Staff Orders (that also allow additional movement and artillery, for instance), give you a system that demands that you make tough decisions throughout the game to achieve your goals.

The rulebook is well laid out, and quite maneuverable by a good contents section. Though not a general inclusion in most systems, I like the fact the author took the time to add inspirational quote snippets from Warriors of the past to start each section...it really gets you in the mood. This is a hefty rulebook as well, numbering past 200+ pages, so there is a lot of meat to the system. However, to my relief, the 'meat' was an easy chew! Well thought out and designed, the system is easy to learn. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but that will happen in short order! I can't wait to play this system.

Very good, easy to learn ww2 rules

I have run three games with these rules at my local club and have found them very enjoyable to play and easy to learn and teach. By the third game we did not need to look up the rules once.

Layout and Content: The rules are well laid out with examples to help show how they work. Thanks to the contents I have been able to find specific rules easily when needed, though this has not been often. A number of generic scenarios are given, as well as rules to use them in a campaign. Starter battle groups and unit stats cover American, British, Germans and Soviets in 1944. A comprehensive rules summary is included at the back which covers pretty much everything you need to play.

Command & Control and Movement: The game is driven by a Command & Control system that uses a modified alternate activation system that keeps both players involved in the game while allowing for co-ordinated attacks. During the game you will have to make tough choices about spending Command or Staff orders to push your attack, to keep your units in the fight, to call for artillery support or to prepare for following turns. You may order your units to move though they may not get as far as you desire due to variable move distances. You can give them a double or triple move to help them get where you want but this takes away from the commands available for the rest of your troops. I found this all worked very well on the table top and forced you to make careful decisions and not to just react to the enemy.

Combat and other rules: Combat is resolved by a simple opposed dice roll mechanism that is also used for a number of other things. This makes it easy to remember the mechanism and the modifiers applied to these rolls. Even if you don’t cause any damage you may still suppress your target. Units which have not yet fired may conduct opportunity fire against an enemy moving or firing within line of sight. Other rules include artillery running out of ammunition, being delayed or even failing to fire all together due to command failure, tanks breaking down due to reliability issues, hidden units, blinds and spotting.

Overall a really good set of rules that are simple and easy to learn while providing the challenge and depth that leads to a fun and enjoyable game.

More than simple, but not overly complex... Command & Control in the fog of war.

I received an evaluation copy of Combat HQ several weeks ago and decided to give it a good going over. Unfortunately, the rules dropped just as my local gaming spot closed its doors and I have only been able to run solo skirmishes to test the features of the rules.

As tabletop miniatures gaming goes, certain features of a rules set appeal to some players and not others. I typically do not like the IgoUgo feature found in many war games where each unit will activate and move like clockwork. Happily this is not a feature found in Combat HQ! This set of rules brings command and control into the fog of war.

At the top of a player's turn, they roll an amount of dice in accordance to the force they are commanding. The results are then grouped into numerical sets in a Yahtzee fashion; 6s, 5s, 4s, etc. discarding 1s. These sets make up the "dice chain" that the player uses to issue commands to units. For instance, if the results are two 6s, three 5s, and one 4 the player has to decide which unit will receive two commands, which will receive three commands, and which will receive one command. Another fun feature to this is the command failure whereby the player rolls more 1s than 6s with the 1s being turned over to the opposing player as wild dice to add to their dice chain.

Another feature I appreciate is the uncertainty built into the variable movement. In many tabletop war games movement is set and predictable, not so in Combat HQ. Each stand in the unit has base movement that is added to by a dice roll. If the player needs a unit to reach a certain spot, they will have to decide whether or not to assign extra movement commands from their dice chain to that unit. Not every unit gets to move each turn.

A general rule amongst my local gaming community is that as long as our forces are based similarly, we play. This rule set accommodates that attitude.

All in all, I am looking forward to giving Combat HQ a full run on the gaming table. If you are looking for a set of WWII rules that are more than Beer & Pretzels simple, but not overly complex then give this a try.

I give Combat HQ a 4 Star rating, I really like it but cannot honestly say 5 Star without playing a full game.

Excellent collection of paranormal mysteries

The names Margaret Maron and Max Allan Collins on the cover of "Crimes by Moonlight" caught my eye. After discovering that this was a collection of 20 "Mysteries from the Dark Side", I was hooked. After reading each story, I can say the collection lived up to its promise. This is an excellent and varied collection of short stories by a mixture of well-known and lesser known authors.

I hadn't read anything by the editor of the collection, Charlaine Harris, prior to this. However, I loved her story about vampire Dahlia Lynley-Chivers. It was full of both adventure and humor, and I would love to read more stories about this character. Other great vampire stories in this collection are Parnell Hall's "Death of a Vampire" and Toni L.P. Kelner's "Taking the Long View". Not all of the stories were related to vampires. For example, Elaine Viets' story of second sight was suspenseful, but still included her wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the ghost stories by Barbara D'Amato, Mike Wiecek, and Carolyn Hart. I also liked Dana Cameron's story, which started out like a traditional mystery - until a werewolf came along! I enjoyed the collaboration of Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane in an unusual Mike Hammer story. There is quite a mixture of different types of stories and settings, so the collection really does have something for everyone.

I have read many collections that have only a couple of good stories, but "Crimes by Moonlight" contains one great story after the other. Fans of vampire and other paranormal stories will love this collection. In addition, those that like the work of contributing authors such as Harley Jane Kozak, Elaine Viets, and Margaret Maron, who aren't usually known for paranormal stories, will love seeing another side of these authors.

A little bit of info.

I bought this book for Charlaine Harris's story but decided to read them all and try to write something about each one. These stories are all so short it's hard to give a synopsis without giving away too much or ruining the ending. I tried to be as careful as I could not to ruin the "punch line", because of this in most of the stories I couldn't even tell you what kind of supernatural is even in them. All the stories have something paranormal in it. (vamp, shifter, ghost,...) Unfortunately I think the stories are just too short to truly give you a taste of a new author. I personally prefer anths that have 3 or 4 stories in them instead.

1) Dahlia Underground - Charlaine Harris - vamp - Story should be read RIGHT after Harris's Southern Vampire Bk7 "All together Dead". Dahlia Lynley-Chivers wakes up buried in the pyramid rubble (see/read A.T.D.) This story contain the local vamp's reaction/retaliation to the explotion. It may be short but it's a nice little addition to the Sookie series plus I like Dahlia and want to read more of her. At this point this is the third short with her in it plus she make a cameo appearance in A.T.D. (also in Tacky, Bacon) This story should be an epilog at the end of A.T.D.

2) Hixton - William Kent Krueger - Reporter D'Angelo tracks down an old retired cop to hear the true story about 5 missing boys and gets more than he expected - this one is a type of remake of a common children's story, can't tell you which one or I ruin the ending. - not to my "taste" (you'll get my joke after you read it)

3) Small Change - Margaret Maron - shifter - Laurel (13yr old) set out in an unusual way to catch the thief of her dad's antique store - kind of cute little story I would be interested in giving one of her longer stories a try

4) The Trespassers - Brendan Dubois - Police Chief Hoyt Graham is called in the middle of the night to a local famous house to find 1 half of a 2 man TV ghost hunting team dead - not great but worth a little time if you get this book.

5) Madeeda - Harley Jane Kozak - Jane England, a pregnant mother and her twin son's get messages from a purple and green witch - this one is very weird and hard to describe.

6) House of Horrors - S.W. Hubbard - The Harrigan family spend the day at the Jersey Shore bonding with their new adopted 9yr. old daughter and a teen boy goes missing in the House of Horrors. - didn't care for this one at all

7) Sift, Almost Invisible, Through - Jeffrey Somers - a man gives a series of photos of himself taken over a year's time all featuring the same mystery man in the background to PI Philip K. Marks. Who or what is this man?

8) The Bedroom Door - Elaine Viets - Leila is warned by her "cursed" grandmother that her business partner will die in 3 days.

9) The Conqueror Worm - Barbara D'Amato - Neal Hofstra received e-mails from an old friend ... a dead friend

10) In Memory of the Sibylline - Lou Kemp - The events aboard a ship in the 1800's and its mysterious guest- an interesting story, might be worth a look at others by this author, maybe.

11) The Bloodflower - Martin Meyers - how having the right/wrong apartment can change 1 women's life forever- didn't care for this story.

12) The Awareness - Terrie Farley Moran - a banshee investigates the murder of one of her charges - has some interesting possibilities for a book or series here.

13) Tadesville - Jack Fredrickson - the life of a banjo player on the road, it never pays to be greedy - I'll take a pass on this one

14) Limbo - Steve Brewer - Mercer wakes up dead on an otopsy table and sets off to find his killer

15) The Insider - Mike Wiecek - Detective Clark is asked to investigate a ghost giving stock tips. Is it legal or insider trading?

16) Swing Shift - Dana Cameron - Jake Steuben is called in by his FBI friend to go undercover to find the source of a governmental leak to the Nazis. - a little interesting, shows some promise for a series/book.

17) Riding High - Carolyn Hart - Bailey Ruth Raeburn a ghost/emissary from Heaven kills time after completing her mission.

18) Grave Matter - Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane - Mike Hammer a WW2 vet gets news an old war buddy is dead, he goes to investigate since no one else will, not even the police.

19) Death of a Vampire - Parnell Hall - goth college student hires P.I. Stanley Hastings to first find out if her boyfriend really is a vampire, then find him after he goes missing - not to bad of a story

20) Taking the Long View - Toni L.P. Kelner - vampire couple Mark and Stella go to a vampire birthday party were another vamp ends up dead. Who is the killer? - cute, has possibilities for more.

As I have NOT read anything by most of these authors and they are sooo short I can't really comment much. (Think a chapter length per story.) Several of them I suspect are like Harris's story and part of a series that would make the short better/fill in the blanks. I had to struggle to get myself to finish this book because I didn't like the majority of it. I still wish they had cut out most of them and giving us longer shorts so we could get a better idea if it is worth checking out any of the other authors or not. Even the stories I think hold promise I don't know if I well ever bother to look for more or not with such a small taste. I've read enough books that had the idea for a great story but no ability to complete it.

All in all I would only recommend this book to someone that is getting it because one of the stories are part of a series they already have and only if you "really" want to read the short. I would not recommend it to a new reader. If you are looking at this book as an anthology to find a new author try a different one with fewer stories. If you want it for Harris's story like I did and have the patience wait and see if she comes out with another book like "A Touch of Dead" that groups her shorts into one book. I didn't have the patience myself. :( But my guess is she will.

strong paranormal mysteries anthology

These twenty short stories focus on paranormal mysteries that run the urban fantasy gamut with vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, seers, mages and Mike Hammer making featured appearances. All of the contributions by The Mystery Writers of America authors are enjoyable tales that sub-genre fans will want to read as the diversity of the supernatural adds to the overall fun. Vampires are right at home in Parnell Hall's amusing "Death of a Vampire" and Charlaine Harris's "Dahlia Underground". Ghosts star in Harley Jane Kozak's "Madeeda", Carolyn Hart's "Riding High" as a marriage counselor and even as a phantom ship in Lou Kemp's "In Memory of the Sibylline". Finally Hammer has a "Grave Matter" (by Max Allan Collins and Mickey Spillane) case with a supernatural taint. This is a strong anthology as everyone contributing showed up in top form providing enjoyable Crimes by Moonlight: Mysteries from the Dark Side collection.
