About the Author
Steven Ackerman is Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is Director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). He received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences at Colorado State University. Ackerman's research interests center on understanding how changes in the radiation balance affect and are affected by changes in other climate variables such as clouds, aerosols, water vapor, and surface properties. These feedback mechanisms are studied using a compliment of theoretical models and observations. He has been actively involved in a number of meteorological projects and programs, including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment, the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Program, and the NOAA Global Climate Change Program. Renowned for his ability to inspire active student participation in his classes, Ackerman has won numerous teaching and academic awards, including the 1999 Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Teaching (University of Wisconsin) and the 2000 Teaching and Learning with Technology Grant (University of Wisconsin). Ackerman is also a member of the University of Wisconsin Teaching Academy.

John Knox is currently Assistant Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia. In addition to his teaching experience at the University of Georgia, Knox has also taught meteorology at Valparaiso University and Barnard College of Columbia University. A National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Rhodes Scholar finalist, he received a B.S. summa cum laude in mathematics in 1988 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Ph.D. in atmospheric science in 1996 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a post-doctoral fellow in climate systems at Columbia University in conjunction with the NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies (NASA/GISS) in New York City. Knox has been very active in geoscience education, with articles published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, the Journal of Geoscience Education, Mathematical Geology, The Physics Teacher, and the Journal of College Science Teaching, for which he has also served on JCST's Board of Advisors. His research in atmospheric dynamics includes journal articles on Rossby waves, non-linear balance, clear-air turbulence, and cyclone-induced windstorms, and is currently supported by NASA.

Amazing introductory-course book

This is a great book for those interested in Meteorology, but who don't have the strong physics and calculus foundation. I would definitely pair this book with an Atmospheric Science book since that way, you understand both the physics and concepts of meteorology. Strongly recommended for climate science beginners.

Excellent intro to meteorology, not Science Channel gloss.

Introductory college course textbook. Older edition, but for armchair weather channel folks who want to know what is really going on it is ideal. The gee-whiz, tornados are cool, approach seen in most "weather" books is notebly and thankfully absent. The reader must work at understanding each chapter, after all it is a freshman in college course text, but for many the effort is well worthwhile.

Excellent, interesting, easy to understand college textbook. Perfect for someone like me, a biologist, who has always wanted to better understand meteorology. My husband really likes the book, too.

I love this woman. I usually give four stars but this guidebook is superb and is written by just one woman. It describes things that you don't get in Lonely Planet or Rough Guide-Especially an entire word and phrase section which covers the gamut of what I wanted to know how to say-AWESOME! She also includes easy maps-not those confusing city maps containing things you would never need but maps easy to read with laundry services! I love her! This guide gives a detailed history of the country and its diverse inhabitants and it describes in detail eco-tourism, budget options, staying with families with links to websites, off the beaten path destinations in cool mountainous regions which is exactly what I was looking for and city sights and night life. Thank You for this book!

At last, I found the beautiful theme to "Railroad Man" by Sakamoto

I had been searching everywhere for piano music for a beautiful song that Ryuichi Sakamoto wrote for a movie called "Railroad Man." I noticed that it was listed in this book and I took a chance and ordered it, sight unseen. I hoped that it would not be too simplified, or, on the other hand, too hard to play. The book arrived promptly from Japan! Luckily, the song was arranged pretty much how your hear Sakamoto playing it on his recording, so it was not "dumbed down" at all. I am about an 8 year piano student level and I found this to be a bit challenging, but not overwhelming. The songs are definitely for late intermediate level at least.

"Railroad Man (or Worker)" is one of my favorite songs and everyone that hears it loves it. It is a flowing, evocative piece. You can find it on youtube. Another pretty tune that I have played in this book is one that Sakamoto wrote for a commercial, called "Energy Flow." Both have a magical sweetness to them. You almost enter a Zen state playing or hearing them! Sakamoto composes in a wide variety of styles and is in great demand in Japan. Some of his songs sound like Classical Music, some are lush and flowing and as I stated before, he has composed music for movies and commercials, other tunes are jarring and avant-garde or minimalist, but Sakamoto is always interesting.

About the Author
Hector Malot (1830-1907) was a French writer born in La Bouille, Seine-Maritime. He studied law in Rouen and Paris, but eventually literature became his passion. He worked as a dramatic critic for Lloyd Francais and as a literary critic for "L'Opinion Nationale." His first book, published in 1859, was" Les Amants." Malot eventually wrote more than 70 books. By far his most famous book is "Sans Famille" ("Nobody's Boy, " 1878), which deals with the travels of the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the street musician Vitalis at age 10. "Sans Famille" gained fame as a children's book, though it was not originally intended as such. He announced his retirement as an author of fiction in 1895, but in 1896 he returned with the novel "L'amour Dominateur" as well as the account of his literary life "Le Roman de mes Romans" (The Novel of my Novels).

A wonderful book

This is a book in my father's collection. I read it when I was 8 or 9 and just read it again recently. In Vietnamese, it is translated as: "Khong Gia Dinh" or "Vo Gia Dinh", meaning "No Family". It is a masterpiece in literature, and it is still in print in Vietnam. It makes a wonderful children book and a deeply moving and meaningful story for the adults as well.
It is a story about an orphan boy, abandoned by his family. He was raised by his kind adopted mother, and was sold by his adopted father in hardship to a traveling man who eventually, became his teacher and a father-figure. With his teacher, he learned to play music and perform on the street with 3 intelligent dogs and a monkey. He traveled through the towns of France, and through life twist and turn, eventually, lead to the ultimate search for his real family.
The book provides insightful description of life on the street and heart warming relationship through life struggles and survival.

A BOOK YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER

NOBODY'S BOY was introduced to me in elementary school while growing up in Holland. It was one of the best books I had ever read and my parents gave it to me for 'Sinterklaas', which is a day on which we exchanged presents. The translated Dutch title is "Alone in the world". It's a story about a boy without a family, his ups and downs and his remarkable character.For some reason the book got lost while we moved to the U.S.A., but I never forgot the story.
Not too long ago (I'm 74 years old now) I realized I would never be able to read the book again, because I did not remember the author. "Never mind" said the librarian, "just type in the Dutch title and we might be able to find it". Sure enough, there it was on the computer screen :"Nobody's Boy", by Hector Malot.
The librarian ordered it for me and we (my husband and I) enjoyed it even more than in our youth. Our two sons and their children have also read it and it's on their list of favorite books.
We will now buy it and add this wonderful book to our library at home.

Timeless Reading

I have been looking for this book since grade school, which makes about 30 years! I wasn't sure of the name of the author but took a chance and ordered anyway. I was delighted to find it was the same book I had loved so many years ago. A poignant and touching story about a boy looking for his family, it was a book I couldn't put down. Vivid and stirring, well written, touching ... all describe this wonderful book. I highly recommend it for any age.

Powerful but sad conclusion to trilogy

Conor followed Daigh at a near run, aware of Aine a step behind him. His thoughts bounced between the socking revelation Aine had just give him – he was going to be a father! – and his inability to comprehend how someone had breached the fortress. Who would dare? How was that even possible?

Summary: When a woman thought dead appears at Ard Dhaimhin one night claiming knowledge of another thought dead, one who may hold secrets they are in desperate need of, a chain of events is set off that will resolve the battle once and for all – in one way or another. Conor sets off on the journey to rescue the man they hope holds the secrets. Aine battles fear as the child within her grows and her time for birth draws near. Eoghan continues to wrestle his attraction to Aine and his uncertainty at being the high king. All desperately search for answers on how to defeat the evil druid before he conquers the rest of Seare, either through force of waiting for them to starve to death under siege.
Notes: The Sword And The Song is the third and final book in The Song Of Seare series. This fantasy/allegory style series sets up a kingdom that feels a bit like medieval times. There are kings and lords and castles. As with many fantasy/allegory books, there is a prophecy that one of the main characters seems to be the fulfillment of, but it’s a bit vague so that the scholars are unsure of exactly who it points to. There is an ultimate being, representing God, protectors like angels, special powers gifted to various individuals for the purpose of serving the ultimate being and helping the people. The good guys in the story live according to the teachings of the ultimate being, attempting to follow Him and trust Him even when it seems nearly impossible to do so. An interesting and somewhat unique element in this book is the existence of a community resembling a monastery, but that hosts thousands of men who are not only trained in the words of the ultimate being, but also in how to be master warriors. They spend their entire lives training in the skills required of a warrior. Yet they are completely separated from the rest of the world. Once they take the oath of brotherhood, they rarely leave, and in fact have to prove themselves in a test in order to be granted permission to leave. Yet they are a key to protecting the people from the evil that wants to infiltrate the land.
Book three of this series pushes the characters to the extreme, placing them in exactly the situations they feared the most. It asks them just how far they will go to defeat evil. Fear versus faith is a continuing theme as the characters have to trust Comidu for the victory they are seeking.
Spoiler Alert: Do NOT read this series if you want happily-ever-after endings. The author does not end the story on a happy note, but rather very tragic.

You might love it. I didn’t.

If this had been a middle book in the series I might have been able to overlook my disappointment, but as the conclusion of a trilogy I have to say that I actually wish I hadn’t read it and had instead supplied my own conclusion. And it wasn’t the sad components that made me so let down by this novel. It was the characters themselves.

Generally in a series I expect to see hope dip and even die in the middle novel(s), but never in the conclusion. In The Sword and The Song, this third installment left us more and more aware of growing rifts between the characters and a general movement toward self-protection, isolation and unhealthy relationships. Good characters stop relying on the God who has equipped and enabled them with gifts and instead try to find their way forward by withdrawing from their gifts rather than calling upon the giver to sustain and shield them within their task.

And the most confusing to me was that the “good guys” start modeling the strategies of the evil characters. From the beginning of the series it’s been clear that the druid is out to destroy all the gifts and those who possess them, but we see how God continues to use the gifts in spite of their ability to be manipulated by evil. Then those with the gifts in flesh start trying to destroy another set of gifts, which are also from God, because they are being dangerously manipulated by evil. It’s as if they are willing to trust God with one set of gifts, but don’t trust that He can work victory within this other set of gifts, while they themselves use these gifts with little discrimination. I found the idea that the heroes would mimic a strategy of destruction distressing. And the ending…how do I tell you about it without spoilers?

It actually reminded me of Isaiah 26:17 where Israel moans that they had tried to birth a live baby and had just passed gas (brought forth wind); that their actions and efforts hadn’t accomplished the salvation that they had hoped for.

All that said, the writing style was as good as the first two books. It has a strong wow factor and is a creative, layered and stylistically well written book. And as much as I hated the dissonance that ran throughout this novel it was hard to put down, until the end when I seriously thought about pitching it across the room. What I really needed to redeem the story was some sort of a moving away from self-protection toward true fellowship restored (especially between Conner and Eoghan) and at least a strong hint of the kingdom come, particularly in a series that has been as heavily laced with hope and expectation as this one.

So that’s my two cents. You might love it. I didn’t.

My Thoughts:

There was so much I like about this book as well as so much that I didn't like. First of all let me say this I have read the other 2 books in this series. I did feel pretty much going into this book what to expect. At time I felt there was too much going on for me to really enjoy it. The action was awesome the love story was on point. I just feel that this book could have been a whole lot shorter to get the point across. In all I did like the book just not one of my favorites I love the first book in this series much better.

Great book with great incites!

This book was very helpful for me, as a woman looking to get back in the dating world. Lily Love's book is honest yet understanding towards women, and offers genuinely good advice from the female perspective. I was worried that I would read this and be asked to follow a bunch of rules that would change who I essentially am but it's not the case. This book gives practical, factual advice that I can follow while still maintaining a strong sense of self while dating. And not only does it explain what men want, but how you have to be happy in yourself first. Great book with great incites! Makes you think about all the things we as women do wrong and why we don't succeed with men.

This book was a great reminder for me as a married woman. I love my husband and I always want to keep our relationship burning and keep him attracted to me from now till we grow old together. The points discussed in this book were very valid to form a solid relationship . The author touched on tops such as looking good and walk around with an air of confidence which is sexy to men, love him , maintain a friendship, listen to him , respect him and definitely spice things up. This is a great relationship guide. I highly recommend !

Great resource for the new 901 and 902 exams.

Just received the book today. I previously read through the first half of the eighth edition of this book while I was waiting for the release of this ninth edition. I looked over what the changes were for the 901 and 902 exams and I'm happy to report that everything is included for the new exams in this edition. I really enjoy Mile Meyers writing style. He writes how people talk in normal conversation and has a good sense of humor which tends to alleviate some of the more dry portions. He is also very thorough in explaining what the exam will cover and what to know for the exam. He also doesn't bore you with additional information that is irrelevant to the exam although he does have additional sections that are labeled "beyond A+" that do cover more in depth topics that are not necessary to pass the exam. These are totally optional so you can skip right over them if you wish.

I will update this review when I complete the book and complete the A+ exams.

If you are studying for the two exams that make up the A+ certification, I would highly recommend this volume.

The old saying is true; you can't judge a book by it's cover... but reviews sure can help.

Finally decided to go after a few certifications and decided that CompTIA A+ was the most logical starting point. However, after realizing how "heavy" the material is, it seemed like a more entertaining style of writing would be more preferred. I'd come across a few older versions of the Dummies and Idiot's Guides and found they were plenty conversational in their style of writing yet also enjoyable to read. Most importantly, I was looking for a book that could not only keep me engaged yet also provide the necessary educational materials. For a time, I did judge some of these books by their covers and the All in One books certainly seemed the most "grown up". The deciding factor for me was several other reviews posted positive results and I'll be glad to add my voice to the wind tunnel.

Presently I'm over a hundred or so pages in (the book is Bible thick) and have purposely slowed myself down at times to ensure lesson absorption but honestly could read this book like it was a spellbinding work of fanciful fiction. The best part is; I'm actually learning and enjoying it.

It really helps to have an actual, honest interest in the subject matter and there are times where you'll want access to several different operating systems. At the very least, have 1 computer of your own but pick up another cheap working one from the flea market or swap meat that you can experiment with.

Its possible I can finish this book in about a month, since certifications aren't cheap I'll probably re-read it over a 2nd month just to be sure. For the sake of science, I'll update this review after testing.
