Break into this ghost story if you dare!

Connelley is famous for the dramatic Harry Bosch series, several of which I have read. When I found out that Connelly had written a ghost story, I got curious.

The Safe Man is about a locksmith named Brian who is called to a famous writer's home on the coast. The writer, Mr. Robinette, has discovered a floor safe in his library. The problem is that he doesn't know the combination.

As it turns out, Mr. Robinette is less interested in the possible contents of the safe then he is having the thing removed from the property.

And so Brian, good at what he does, manages to open it and discovers that it is in fact, empty. Or is it?

I can't say more without ruining it but if you enjoy a good ghost story that will make you wake up in the middle of the night and double check the locks on the doors of your home at 3 AM, then this is a story you should read!

As a bonus, there is of course the first few chapters of the newest Bosch novel,The Black Box, which is due out next month

This is a con for promotional material

I recently reviewed the 6 chapter free sampler for Michael Connelly's "The Black Box" and commented that it was a great idea to release a long sampler to attract you to the full book - still to be released. So while I was waiting for that release I saw this apparent Novella by Michael Connelly and thought that I would read it while waiting for "The Black Box" to be released. It was shown as a stand-alone story with no page count.

I was stunned to find that "The Safe Man" only takes up 40% of the Kindle book, with the remaining 60% being the 6 chapter free sampler that I had already read. There was no indication in the book description that most of the book would be promotional material. IMHO this is a real con and (forgive the possible pun) is something that an author of Connelly's status should not be associated with.

When Vince Flynn released "Kill Shot" over 30% of the content of the Kindle edition was excerpts from earlier books. At the time Flynn said on his website "We thought readers would enjoy being able to read excerpts from all of my backlist, but as it turns out, we've heard otherwise from many of you." The backlist content was quickly removed. I would have thought that Michael Connelly and/or his publishers would have learned from that experience.

This is not even a novella but a very short story which only took about 15 minutes to read. It is a minor ghost story and at best it would only scrape 3 stars by my ranking. (Edit) I have changed my rating to reflect this statement and not my 1 star view about the promotional content.

(Edit) - FYO "The Black Box" was actually released on 21 November in Australia by Allen and Unwin, nearly a week ahead of its forthcoming release on 26 November in the US by Hatchette. My full (5 star) review is now shown on the US pre-order listing.

This is a con

This exercise in misrepresentation consists of 2500 pages in total. 600 are a half baked story about a safe akin to a bottle and a genie which escapes, which is incomplete, and the following 1500 pages are again an incomplete teaser for another book The Black Box which when you then buy it, you can complete the 5000 page story. So for what you pay for this rubbish you get two incomplete stories. Pure waste of money and time.
It does not even rate one star but I can't write this review without at least one star.
What finally added insult to injury was after finding The Safe Man was rubbish and very short, I then found when reading the introduction to the second story The Black Box, that I had purchased and read that book two weeks prior.
I know, I should have done more research but I didn't expect this sham.
This behaviour by Amazon is something they should be ashamed of and I can tell you they won't con me again like this. Very disgruntled. How Michael Connelly allowed his name to be used for this sham is beyond me.

Hallion probes the context in which air-Iand operations occurred and how they influenced the outcome of specific battles and campaigns. While it is popularly believed that the idea of "air-land battle" came about within the last two decades, air-land attack actuallybegan as early as World War I. Even though aircraft development was in a primitive stage, air-land attack by air and land forces working together had a deadly synergy; for example, battlefield air interdiction played a decisive role in the collapse of Turkish forces in Palestine during the summer of 1917. At first only of nuisance value, air attack against ground forces assumed criticalimportance by the late 1930s (the time of the ma]or interwar conflicts in Abyssinia, Spain, and China), and was of decisive significance during the Second World War. The need for aircraft capable of undertaking such missions led to the development of entire categories of specialized attack, dive, and medium bomber airplanes. By the Second World War, such specialized attackplanes had proven vulnerable both to opposing fighter planes and antiaircraft fire. World War II thus witnessed the evolution of the more potent, more flexible, and more survivable fighter-bomber: aircraft such as the P-47, the Typhoon, the FW 190G, and the Yak 7B. These became devastatingly effective weapons for the two principal missions of battlefield air interdiction and close air support. Using case studies from World War I through 1945 to illustrate the evolution of battlefield air attack, Hallion examines such issues as technology choices, doctrine, military strategy/ battlefield experience, and lessons learned.

I really enjoyed this book; it draws together very nicely the kaleidoscopic picture of the strategic, tactical, and technological developments, the political trends, and the major players in the world of attack aviation during the tumultuous early 20th century. Hallion filled nagging gaps in my understanding of a fascinating, formative period of avi-history. Smithsonian nails it again!

Excellent treatment on Close Air Support and Battlefield Interdiction

Richard Hallion has provided a seminal work on the development of aerial battlefield interdiction and close air support from the first decade of powered flight until the end of the Second World War. He treats the development of concepts and doctrines from many major combatants during the critical period of the development of the airplane as a weapon on the modern battlefield.

Strike from the Skies

Strike from the Skies was a pretty good book. It was well written and thoroughly researched but I feel it spent too much time dsicussing close air support during the intra-war years and not enough time on World War Two.
This may seem like a very petty criticism but the photo on the cover didn't really make much sense. I would have expected a P-47 or Typhoon or IL-2 or even a Stuka blowing a tank to smithereens, not a B-26 flying at 10,000 feet.
Maybe I was expecting more "stories of sorties" but I felt the text was a bit dry. I guess I thought it would read more like an adventure novel and therefore was somewhat disappointed. (Flying down on the deck strafing enemy positions has to be a bit of a thrill, right?)

About the Author
Kenton E. Ross is Professor Emeritus, Department of Accounting, at Texas A&M University--Commerce. He formerly served as Dean of the College of Business and Technology; Director of Business and Economic Research; and Head, Department of Accounting.

Claudia B. Gilbertson was a high school instructor for 11 years and a community college instructor for 25 years. Currently retired from North Hennepin Community College, Claudia serves as a consultant for accounting online learning solutions. She is active in the National Business Education Association, North Central Business Education Association, and Minnesota Business Educators, Inc.

Mark W. Lehman, assistant professor emeritus of Accountancy at the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy at Mississippi State University, teaches Accounting Information Systems and Forensic Accounting. A former auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr. Lehman is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. Dr. Lehman writes journal articles and consults with accountants on the use of software in fraud detection. He was awarded Outstanding Educator by the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants in 2007.

The late Robert D. Hanson was Professor of Business Education and Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University.

With so many phony TCM practitioners going around cheating uninitiated Westerners with their exotic claims and theories, it's good to have books like this which only provides the facts.

This small book manages not only to list but even provide some details on each commonly used Chinese herb. The herb's energy, taste and organs affected are all mentioned. It's definitely a good buy for anyone interested in learning more about one aspect of TCM as it is.
