Facsimile Edition with a "Secret"

This is not a reprint of a single novel but a facsimile or replica of the entire original issue of The Spider (vol. 19, no. 3, Dec. 1939) featuring the epic novel `Satan's Murder Machines' by Norvell W. Page (writing under the name Grant Stockbridge). Thus, the rest of the contents of the magazine are also included: "The Book Shop Killings" by Charles Boswell and "Mr. X's Magic Corpse" by Moran Tudury, plus the original pulp illustrations (and several quaint ads: "Ankles Swollen, Backache, Nervous, Kidneys Strained?" . . . "I Talked with God!"). At the back of the book is a bonus short story by Norvell Page, "Crime's Christmas Carols" (reprinted from Detective Tales, May 1939).

Why did they reproduce the entire magazine instead of re-typesetting the Spider novel with a modern font and design? Well, for me there's the appeal of reading the story exactly the way it was originally published, but without the nauseating mildew of a crumbling collectible. But more important, what seems to be distinctive about this edition is that it stands as evidence for a "trade secret" concerning Stan Lee, revealed by Joel Frieman in the added preface, "How to Build a Hero."

Hint: Stan Lee must have meant this book when he wrote, in 'Son of Origins of Marvel Comics': "Historians of the future must know that they can trust this book, have faith in its pictures, and treat its text as gospel" (quote added to this Ramble House edition, at the end of the novel, p. 86).

So I just received my copy in the mail today, and have not fully had the time to read it in its entirety, but from what I have gone through so far this book is outstanding. It's filled with precedents, material info, technique info, and step by step processes of how to handle and produce certain materials. Its also got theory and wonderful images.

Love this book. I am a firm beliver of healing with food. This book really works. My husband thought I was crazy at first, but when he tried some of the food cures he was a believer. You will not be dissapointed. Nothing is better at healing your body than the pure source of foods.

The first part is some general information on what's good or bad with some foods/ingredients we take everyday, which is especially useful if you care about what you eat and your well being. The second part of the book provides some detailed information on each or particular food group and their general curing capacity. It's an excellent book for those who want to live a health life. I bought this book after looking over some pages and find it contain some extremely useful information on healthy eating, and had to have it.

Hot, Sexy, Enchanting and Romantic!

This story really pulled at my heart strings...Yes, it was hot, sexy and erotic; but there was so much tenderness and romance in the story. Not just in bed, but between the characters. The story and the characters pulled me in and after 3 prior Novellas, I have come to know the characters well and love them.

I recommend reading the entire series...a bit bummed that it is over, but it ended so wonderfully.

Now that I have all 4 Novellas on my kindle, I plan to read them in succession.

I just received this in the mail, and I am SO glad I've held out on getting this book!! The 4th edition is so much better than the 3rd!! Not only does it add instructions and step by steps for PhotoShop renderings, it includes a CD that has a video of the author herself doing a step by step of a basic croquis. The book is very daunting at over 500 pages, but the video on the disc gets directly into it and makes it easier to move forward in the book. It throws a lot of information at you at once. LOVE IT though. So glad I have it!

Dada art was not a nihilistic negation of culture, contends French art historian Dachy. Rather, the movement's provocation and humor were an affirmation of new freedoms as dadaists liberated materials (object-sculptures, pasted papers), words (automatic writing), language (concrete poems, free prose, sound poems) and brought an anticonventional spirit to photography, filmmaking, typography, collage and book design. Dazzlingly illustrated with 120 color reproductions and some 200 black-and-white photographs, this sweeping chronicle follows Dada from its utopian phase when Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp and Francis Picabia espoused a constructive vision, through its rejection of the idea of progress and its turn to pure vocal and visual gestures as a way of deconstructing socially given behaviors, personas and ideas. Artists as far apart as Russia, New York, Holland, Spain and Germany carried forward the original Dada impulse that stunned Zurich in 1916. Serious students of Dada or surrealism will want this slipcased album.

The result is a collective redefinition of the Dada movement. The chronology, bibliography, and index are superb entry points and are aided by high-quality illustrations. However, the extremely academic focus of this work may well put off the general reader. Serge Lemoine's Dada (Universe, 1987) and John Erickson's Dada: Performance, Poetry, and Art (G.K. Hall, 1984) offer more digestible insights on Dada and its impact on subsequent art. Nevertheless, Dachy's monograph is essential for academic and museum libraries covering the Dada movement. An excellent, comprehensive overview of the Dada movement, extending well beyond the dates in the title! Although the translated text is occasionally a bit clunky, it is quite readable and informative - and even without it, the extensive collection of photos and high-quality reproductions of key Dada art pieces would make this book an important reference work on their own...a shame it is currently unavailable! One hopes this problem will soon be rectified.

About the Author
ROBERT BURNETT is professor of Media and Communication Studies, Karlstad University. Burnett is the author of The Global Jukebox: The International Music Industry (Routledge, 1996), Concentration and Diversity in the International Phonogram Industry (Gothenburg, 1990) and the co-author of, Web Theory (Routledge 2002, with David Marshall).
His main research areas include the global media, the music industry, digital media, and the Internet.
Burnett has been a regular commentator on global media issues with appearances on radio and television programs and commentaries for newspaper and magazine articles. He is one of the founders of the Communication, Media and Information Technology (CMIT) Research Group as well as the HumanIT Research Group. Burnett has been a visiting scholar in Canada, the USA, Scotland, Norway and Zimbabwe.

ANNA BRUNSTROM received MSc and PhD degrees in computer science from College of William and Mary, Virginia, USA in 1993 and 1996, respectively. In 1996 she joined the Department of Computer Science at Karlstad University where she is now a professor. She is research manager for the distributed systems and communications research group and also served as research manager for the Department of Computer Science from July 1998 until June 2002. She leads several research projects on communication protocols and is active in national and international projects on wireless communications. She has authored and co-authored two book chapters and over 30 scientific papers. She is a member of IEEE and ACM.

ANDERS G. NILSSON is professor of information systems at Karlstad University, Sweden. He has a PhD in information management from Stockholm School of Economics, and is a research partner at the Institute for Business Process Development (Institute V) in Stockholm. Anders has been working as a researcher with the ISAC approach to information systems development, the SIV method for acquisition of standard application packages (enterprise systems, ERP systems) and a business modeling framework for creating method combinations. He has also been active as an adviser to many change projects in private industry and the public sector, and has been fro many years deputy chair for the special interest group for systems development (SIG-SYS) at the Swedish Information Processing Society. Anders is author/co-author of 14 books on business and systems development.
