From Booklist
Hickman has been busily working away creating the groundbreaking Manhattan Projects and East of West for Image, but he returns to more mainstream comics with Marvel’s New Avengers. In this second volume, he brings back the gargantuan titan Thanos, who is searching for infinity gems in this Marvel crossover event. The Illuminati (Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Reed Richards, Black Bolt, Namor, Black Panther, and Beast) have their hands full—not only are they tasked with saving the Marvel universe but they also need to prevent the destruction of the entire multiverse. Worlds are literally colliding as Thanos wreaks havoc, and the Illuminati are the only ones with the brainpower to save the day. As is typical for comics with Hickman at the helm, it’s smart and wordy and requires readers to pay close attention. Meanwhile, Deodato maintains vivid consistency in his coloring and line work over the entire collection. Hailed in comic circles as a standout in the entire Avengers universe, this series continues to be perfect for deep-rooted Marvel fans. --Ben Spanner

Good story. DON'T buy it.
By Ben Martin
This is good, but it contains chapters of a bigger story, which are all in the "Infinity" collection.
Don't buy this. Buy the bigger collection instead. I bought this, then bought the bigger volume since I felt like I was missing a few things, and then gave this one to a friend. Infinity was a big, complicated story, but it was a good purchase, and I'm glad I've got that instead of just this.

The Illuminati Vs. Infinity
By Slim Cat
This volume collects issues 7-12.
The illuminati, a very secretive group of superheroes who have banded together to protect the world at whatever the cost. Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Namor, Black Bolt, and Beast must fight off an invasion from Thanos, with none of the Avengers around due to cosmic level threats that have taken them off earth. Not only do they have to deal with the mad titan's overwhelming forces but the incursion events, earth's from parallel universes sliding into the 616's world and threatening to destroy both world's, are still looming.
Jonathan Hickman is rocking it with this series. As the subtitle implies, this title ties in with the "Infinity" event that is written by him as well. Marvel is going to release a big hardcover with all the Infinity, New Avengers, and Avengers issues involved in this massive epic story. I have read all three series and the New Avengers section is the least held to the other and stands the best on it's own. It's main focus is on the Illuminati group and on earth unlike Avengers and Infinity that focus on many characters from around the galaxy. This series sticks to the problems presented in the first volume and adds the alien invasion of Thanos due to his desire to hunt down the infinity gems the illuminati once possessed, a secretive surprise, and that the main Avengers have left Earth to deal with the life creating world architects, The Builders, who have gone mad and are destroying worlds. Hickman does give some answers that the other two series leave the reader wanting as to the Builders and how they were just the horizon of the madness to arise.
Hickamn continues the subplot of Wakanda and Atlantis being at war very well with the hostilities between Black Panther and Namor very present. They hate each other due to their roles as leaders of their nations but must get along as members of the Illuminati to fight for the existence of their world. There is also some scheming on Black Bolt's part as he is seemingly tired of being the King of the Inhumans. Every individual on this team is a fascinating character and the dynamics of their team are very unique. It is not a superhero book, not an offshoot of the Avengers anyway, as they have to make hard despicable decisions that darken their souls. It has a lot of crazy sci-fi action as well as political intrigue. Thanos makes a perfect villain who is just capitalizing on taking care of his wants at an opportune time. His generals, The Black Order, are a really cool new group of mixed space races with cool powers psychopaths that give the Illuminati fits.
Mike Deodato's artwork fits the book perfectly as it has this dark edge that is perfect for the story. His work is really gorgeous to look at.
Cannot wait for the next volume as this is definitely one of my top series and these men are going to pay dearly for their sins.

Big Trouble in Little Earth
By Axel McAsset
There may be spoilers ahead:
Previously in New Avengers:
The Illuminati, a secret sect of superheroes (current roster: Black Bolt, Namor, Reed Richards, Iron Man, Beast, Doctor Strange and Black Panther) have joined forces to combat the threat of parallel Earths colliding with our own. They have been successful so far, saving Earth 616 with the duplicitous assistance of the Black Swan, a mysterious humanoid female of unknown power or origin who they captured during one planetary incursion (see New Avengers, Vol. 1: Everything Dies). Meanwhile, Namor and Black Panther have been squaring up against each other due to Namor's actions against T'Challa's country when he was possessed by the Phoenix Force (see Avengers Vs X-men #1 (1st Printing)). War is seemingly brewing...
Now, in volume 2:
War has occurred. Is occurring. Thanos the Mad Titan has invaded with his galactic armies of The Black Order, using the distractions of The Builders (see the recent Avengers volumes 1 to Infinity) and the parallel incursions as his opportunity to strike. The Avengers have headed off into space to meet the oncoming threat, leaving the Illuminati to do what they can from Earth.
Attacks in New York, Wakanda, Attilan and Atlantis keep the New Avengers busy. The X-Men get brief cameos as the Jean Grey School also comes under attack. Doctor Strange is confronted by one of Thanos' generals, called The Ebony Maw. Stephen starts acting...well, strange. Maximus the Mad, Black Bolt's brother, is building a machine for questionable means.
And just what is the real reason for Thanos' attack on Earth anyway?
This is actually a great story. It is "grown-up" comic fiction and would appeal to readers who are after something more than just crash, bang, wallop, baddies vs goodies. The artwork by Mike Deodato is beautiful as are the individual issue covers by Deodato, Frank and Laura Martin. Why have I only given it 3 stars? Well, it is because this New Avengers 'tie-in' to the overall Infinity story is fractured somewhat - it is interspersed in and out of the main event (as is The Avengers tie-in volume). So what you get is for example, in issue 10, something happens; there's a big, significant leap forward in the bigger picture elsewhere in the story, then in issue 11 it's leap-frogged ahead so if you haven't read the rest of Infinity (like I hadn't) you can get easily confused.
To help you understand, the whole Infinity saga runs in this order:
(New Avengers 7 and 8 = prologues)
Infinity 1
Avengers 18, New Avengers 9
Infinity 2
Avengers 19, New Avengers 10
Infinity 3
Avengers 20
Infinity 4
Avengers 21, New Avengers 11
Infinity 5
Avengers 22
Avengers 23
Infinity 6
New Avengers 12
So you see how reading just this volume can get confusing. It is still a great story, as long as you have read Volume 1, and the rest of Infinity. This probably warrants 4 stars in the bigger picture. As a standalone volume, probably 2.5 stars.
